With the Worlds Shortest Parade down Nesbit Street in Punta Gorda, the 2012 IFDS Worlds launched with the cannon fire of the Royal Order of the Ponce de Leon Conquistadors echoing through the air. Conquistadors in period garb served as an international honor guard, bearing the flags of 12 nations whose sailors are competing in the world championship.
Following the parade, a World Fair & Market featured international foods and crafts and Pusser's Rum hosted a party for competitors and officials.
Competitor registration and classification and measurement of boats began and will continue Sunday and Monday, with a practice race scheduled for Monday afternoon.
Racing begins Tuesday at 11 a.m., with races continuing Wednesday through Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m.
